Hi friends, I’m Nina Ratliff, owner of The Folded Leaf Yoga and Wellness Center here in Charleston, West Virginia. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that healing rarely happens on just one level. True wellness comes when we tend to our bodies, minds, and spirits with the same care and compassion. For me, massage therapy has been one of the most powerful ways to help people return home to themselves — to soften, release, and restore balance from the inside out.

At The Folded Leaf, I offer a range of massage services designed to meet the unique needs of every individual. Whether you’re looking for deep therapeutic work, gentle relaxation, or energetic alignment, each session is an opportunity to reconnect with your body and nurture your overall well-being.

Integrative Bodywork: A Personalized Path to Healing

Integrative bodywork is at the heart of my massage practice. This approach allows me to combine multiple modalities into one session, tailoring the experience based on how your body presents in the moment. Some days your muscles may crave deep tissue work, while other days your nervous system needs calming and nurturing touch.

In integrative bodywork, I often weave together techniques from Swedish, neuromuscular, and deep tissue massage, along with cupping therapy, hot stones, or sound therapy when appropriate. The goal is always the same — to restore flow, relieve pain, and encourage the body’s natural healing response.

Every session begins with a short conversation so I can understand your current needs. I believe the body tells its own story, and as a practitioner, my role is to listen through touch.

Deep Tissue Massage: For Chronic Tension and Muscle Recovery

If you live an active lifestyle, work long hours at a desk, or simply hold stress in your shoulders and neck, a deep tissue massage can be profoundly beneficial. This modality focuses on releasing adhesions and chronic tension in the deeper layers of muscles and fascia.

Unlike what some people think, deep tissue doesn’t have to mean deep pain. The pressure is applied mindfully, guided by your breath and body’s feedback, to gradually melt away tightness and restore mobility. Many of my clients find that regular deep tissue sessions help them move more freely, recover faster, and sleep more deeply.

Swedish Massage: Restoring Calm and Circulation

When you need rest more than repair, Swedish massage offers a gentle, flowing rhythm that soothes the nervous system and promotes deep relaxation. This classic technique uses long gliding strokes, kneading, and light joint movement to improve circulation and ease everyday tension.

It’s an ideal choice if you’re new to massage or simply want to unwind. Swedish massage supports the parasympathetic nervous system — your body’s “rest and digest” mode — helping to lower stress hormones and increase feelings of peace and wellbeing.

Neuromuscular Massage: Targeted Relief for Pain Patterns

Neuromuscular massage therapy takes a more focused approach, targeting specific muscle groups and trigger points that contribute to pain or restricted movement. It’s especially effective for conditions like sciatica, tension headaches, or repetitive strain injuries.

Through gentle precision work, I help release the source of discomfort rather than just treating the symptoms. Clients often leave with improved posture, greater range of motion, and a renewed sense of ease.

Cupping Massage: Restoring Circulation and Detoxifying the Body

An ancient healing art with modern relevance, cupping massage uses suction cups to gently lift the tissues, increase blood flow, and encourage the release of stagnation in the muscles and fascia.

Cupping can be integrated into a session or done as a standalone treatment. It’s wonderful for relieving sore muscles, breaking up fascia adhesions, and supporting the lymphatic system’s natural detoxification. Many people describe the sensation as deeply relaxing once the cups are placed — it’s a feeling of tension releasing from the inside out.

Hot Stone Massage: The Deep Comfort of Warmth

Hot stone massage combines traditional massage with the soothing heat of basalt stones. The warmth penetrates deep into the muscles, encouraging relaxation while easing chronic tension and fatigue.

This treatment is grounding and restorative, especially during colder months or times of high stress. The stones act as extensions of my hands, helping your body surrender fully into the table, leaving you balanced and rejuvenated.

Sound Therapy: Healing Through Vibration

In addition to massage, I often incorporate sound and vibrational therapy to help calm the mind and balance the body’s energetic systems. Using instruments such as crystal bowls, chimes, or tuning forks, sound waves gently entrain the brain into slower frequencies, supporting deep relaxation and energetic alignment.

Sound therapy pairs beautifully with bodywork, enhancing the therapeutic effects by promoting a meditative, centred state. Clients frequently describe it as a full-body reset — a sense of harmony that lingers long after the session ends.

A Holistic Philosophy of Care

Every massage session at The Folded Leaf is rooted in the belief that the body already knows how to heal. My role as a practitioner is to create the right environment — through safe touch, mindful listening, and a nurturing space — so that healing can naturally unfold.

As a trauma-informed 500 E-RYT yoga teacher, licensed massage therapist, Level 2 Reiki practitioner, and sound healer, I approach each session with presence and intention. Whether I’m offering bodywork, teaching yoga, or guiding meditation, my focus is always on helping you reconnect to your innate wisdom and resilience.
