FAQ’S

Frequently asked questions

Sound and vibrational therapy is a holistic healing practice that uses therapeutic sound frequencies and vibrations to promote wellness and restore balance in the body, mind, and spirit. Based on the principle that everything in the universe—including our bodies—is in constant vibration, this ancient practice uses instruments like singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, and chimes to introduce specific healing frequencies. These sounds and vibrations work on a cellular level, helping to realign your body's natural rhythms, release tension, and facilitate deep healing.

Sound therapy works through the principle of entrainment and resonance. When therapeutic sound frequencies are introduced, your body's cells, brainwaves, and energy systems naturally synchronize to these healing vibrations. The sound waves penetrate your body at a cellular level, affecting your nervous system, muscles, organs, and energy field. This creates a "vibrational massage" that reduces stress hormones, releases physical tension, clears energetic blockages, and guides your brainwaves from active beta states into deeply relaxed theta and alpha states where healing occurs.

Common instruments include Himalayan singing bowls (metal bowls that produce rich, resonant tones), crystal singing bowls (made from quartz crystal producing pure frequencies), gongs (creating powerful, multidimensional sound waves), tuning forks (precision-calibrated to specific healing frequencies), drums (rhythmic beats for grounding and release), chimes and bells (high-frequency ethereal tones), and sometimes voice or mantra. Each instrument produces different frequencies and serves unique healing purposes.

During a sound therapy session, you'll lie comfortably on a yoga mat, often covered with a blanket. Some sessions place therapeutic singing bowls directly on your body (you remain fully clothed), while others have instruments played around you. The session typically begins with a single bowl strike, then various instruments create layered sounds and vibrations for 30-90 minutes. You may experience deep relaxation, tingling sensations, emotional releases, visual imagery, or a meditative trance-like state. Sessions end with gentle sounds to bring you back to awareness.

No! Sound therapy is a completely passive, receptive experience. Your only "job" is to lie still, breathe naturally, and allow the sounds and vibrations to work on your body. You can set an intention at the beginning if you wish, but then simply let go and receive. Some people fall asleep, others enter deep meditation, and some remain aware throughout—all are perfectly fine. The healing happens regardless of your mental state.

Benefits include reduced stress and anxiety, improved sleep quality, decreased physical pain and muscle tension, lowered blood pressure and heart rate, enhanced immune function, emotional release and processing, improved mental clarity and focus, balanced energy and chakras, deeper meditation states, heightened creativity, and an overall sense of peace and well-being. Many people also report feeling more grounded, centered, and connected after sessions.

Sound therapy is generally very safe and gentle. However, it's not recommended for people with sound-triggered epilepsy, certain heart conditions with pacemakers (due to vibrations), or those in the first trimester of pregnancy. If you have tinnitus, extreme sound sensitivity, or certain mental health conditions, consult your healthcare provider first and inform your practitioner. People with metal implants can still participate—just let the instructor know so bowls aren't placed directly on those areas.

Yes! Sound therapy is exceptionally effective for anxiety and stress. The therapeutic frequencies naturally shift your nervous system from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) mode. Studies show that sound therapy lowers cortisol levels, reduces heart rate, and promotes the release of calming neurotransmitters. Many participants report feeling deeply peaceful and centered after just one session, with benefits lasting days or even weeks with regular practice.

This depends on your needs and goals. For general stress relief and wellness, once or twice monthly is beneficial. For addressing specific issues like chronic pain, anxiety, or insomnia, weekly sessions for 4-6 weeks followed by maintenance sessions can be helpful. Some people attend regularly as part of their self-care routine, while others come as needed when feeling overwhelmed or out of balance. Even a single session can provide significant benefits.

It's possible! Many people enter such deep states of relaxation that they drift in and out of sleep or enter a dream-like state between waking and sleeping. This is perfectly normal and doesn't diminish the healing effects—in fact, it shows your nervous system is deeply relaxed. Whether you sleep, meditate, or remain aware throughout, your body is still receiving the therapeutic benefits of the sound vibrations.

The terms are often used interchangeably, though "sound bath" typically refers to a group experience where participants are "bathed" in sound waves, while "sound therapy" can be either group or individual and may involve more personalized approaches like placing bowls on the body. Both use the same principles and instruments. Our classes incorporate elements of both—group settings with therapeutic individual attention.

After a session, move slowly and give yourself time to reintegrate. Drink plenty of water to help your body process and release what was stirred up. Avoid stimulating activities, loud environments, or stressful situations for at least an hour if possible. Many people feel peaceful and grounded, while others may feel emotional or sleepy. Journal if you wish, rest if needed, and be gentle with yourself as the healing continues to unfold for 24-48 hours after.

While music can certainly be therapeutic, sound therapy uses specific frequencies, instruments, and techniques designed for healing rather than entertainment. The vibrations in sound therapy penetrate your body much more deeply than regular music listening. Therapeutic instruments are chosen for their ability to create sustained, resonant tones and physical vibrations. The intention, setting, and application (like placing bowls on the body) create a much more profound healing experience than passive music listening.
