Finding relief so you can get back to the life you love

I’ve lost count of how many people come to me carrying back pain that they’ve just…learned to live with. They stop hiking as far. They skip the kayak trip. They wake up stiff and chalk it up to getting older. And honestly, that breaks my heart a little, because most of the time, that pain doesn’t have to be permanent.

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Kanawha State Forest, the New River Gorge, Coonskin Park, this landscape practically invites you to move through it. But an active life in the mountains asks a lot of the body. Uneven trails, elevation changes, carrying gear, long drives through winding roads, physical work, it all lands somewhere in the body, and more often than not, it lands in the back.

That’s not a reason to slow down. It’s a reason to take care of yourself.

Why Back Pain Is So Common Here

What I see in my practice is that back pain in Charleston tends to come from a very specific combination of things: the physical demands of an outdoor lifestyle, the postural strain of modern work, and the tension that builds up when we don’t give our bodies enough time to recover.

Cold weather tightens everything. Long days on the trail or the water stress muscles that don’t always get the recovery they need. And even the most enthusiastic hikers can wake up the morning after a beautiful day in the gorge, wondering why they can barely move.

The body keeps score, and when it’s been pushed without enough support, it starts to talk back.

What Massage Actually Does

I approach every bodywork session from a holistic perspective. My goal isn’t just to quiet the pain; it’s to help your body remember how to release it.

When we work with tight, overworked muscles through therapeutic massage, we’re inviting the nervous system to shift out of that constant state of bracing and guarding. Circulation improves. Tissue that’s been starved of oxygen and blood flow starts to soften. The whole body gets a message that it’s safe to let go.

For back pain specifically, deep tissue work can address the layers of tension that have built up over time, particularly in people who are active but not giving their bodies enough recovery, including those attending yoga classes. Swedish massage is wonderful for nervous system regulation, especially when stress and physical strain feed each other. Neuromuscular techniques help when there’s something more specific going on, like muscle imbalances or that persistent spot that just won’t quit. Cupping, hot stone, and integrative bodywork each have their own way of reaching the places that need it most.

We also have practitioners here who offer sound healing and Reiki, and I’m a firm believer that back pain, like most pain, isn’t only physical. The nervous system carries more than muscle tension, and sometimes the body needs to be held in a way that goes a little deeper. Our team is here for that, too.

This Isn’t Just for After It Hurts

One of the things I wish more people understood is that massage works best as a consistent practice, not just a last resort. When you come in regularly, we can stay ahead of the tension before it becomes a problem. Your body learns to release more easily. Your range of motion improves. You go into your next weekend adventure feeling ready instead of already behind.

I love being out in nature as much as anyone; hiking, paddleboarding, and spending time outdoors are part of my own life here. So I understand the desire to push through and just keep going. But I’ve also learned, both personally and through years of working with bodies, that recovery is part of the practice. It’s not optional.

What to Expect When You Come In

If you’ve never had a massage, or if it’s been a while, I want you to know that every session at The Folded Leaf Yoga and Wellness Center is a conversation. We talk about where you’re holding tension, what your body has been through lately, and what you need. Nothing is one-size-fits-all. Pressure and technique are always adjusted to what feels right for you.

Most people leave feeling lighter than they expected, easier in their movement, quieter in their nervous system. That’s what we’re working toward.

Come Back to What You Love

If back pain has been keeping you on the sidelines, from the trails, from morning movement, from just feeling comfortable in your own body, I’d love to help. You deserve to feel good in this life you’re living, in this place we’re so lucky to call home.

You can book your appointment online right here.

I’ll see you at the table.
